KES 1st Squash Team win 4 from 5 at Saints Fest!
21 April 2017
King Edward VII School 1st Squash Team took part in the Saints Fest and MIC, Mr Bradd Lodge reports back on the teams achievements:

King Edward VII’s attendance at the annual St. Stithians College Squash festival took place this past Easter weekend at the St. Stithians Squash centre.

A variety of schools from across the country attended the annual sports festival to participate over the Easter weekend in what has become a popular celebration of competitive junior squash.

On Day 1 of the festival King Edward VII’s 1st team encountered Grey College, who proved to demonstrate immense depth, resulting in our only loss over the weekend, going down narrowly 12-9. The teams participating are comprised of 6 players, often ranging in age group and experience.

Our second fixture of the day saw us take on Northcliff High School, who over the years has traditionally been a strong opponent of King Edward VII. It proved to be an excellent result for our learners, as we won the fixture comfortably 18-2, with every member of the team winning their respected matches.

On Day 2 of the festival, we took on the might of two Grahamstown schools, namely Kingswood College and Graeme College. Kingswood is a formidable opponent of ours, often having encountered each other over the years at various Squash festivals. The cards were on the table for a positive result after much preparation this season. The Red Strings did not disappoint and claimed a comfortable 18-2 victory over Kingswood.

Graeme College proved to be more of a challenge, showing promise in terms of the quality of their depth. However, the lads were able to hold their own, by securing 5 victories and only registering 1 loss for this particular fixture. The final result being 15-6 to KES.

The 3rd and final day of the festival saw KES take on a Festival Invitational team, comprising of junior players who have been invited to participate. Due to the lack of experience and teamwork evident, this did not prove too challenging at all for Red Strings, resulting in a comprehensive victory 18-2.

Overall, a successful tournament for the Red Strings, securing 4 wins from 5 fixtures. In many cases, we are building on last year’s performances, having retained the majority of the team, with the festival serving as a great opportunity for us to test our might against various schools from around the country.

Thank you to Mike Bester & Ilze Nel for hosting once again, another successful Saints Easters Squash festival.

Yours in Squash
Mr. Lodge
