KES 1st Squash Runners-up at Top Schools Tournament 2017
06 June 2017
King Edward VII School 1st Team at the Central Gauteng Junior Squash Top Schools Tournament  2 - 4 June.

Report back by Mr Bradd Robert Lodge

The Central Gauteng Junior squash, Top Schools’ play-off was held at St Stithians College this past weekend.

A collection of all boys’ schools’ descended upon St Stithians over the course of the weekend, as to determine who will represent Central Gauteng Junior Squash at the National Championships, held in Pietermaritzburg in August.

King Edward VII’s 1st team, in their first fixture took on a difficult opponent in the form of Egoli Squash on Friday night. Unfortunately, their depth proved too strong for the Red Strings, resulting in a 16-11 loss.

The 2nd day of competition saw us up against Northcliff High School. With the team looking to bounce back from their opening fixture, a convincing victory ensued, with KES winning 20-0.

The 3rd and last day certainly proved to be our most difficult. Having qualified for the semi-finals, Sunday morning saw the hosts of the tournament, St Stithians take on the might of King Edward VII. With our Captain, Nicholas Moyes, losing narrowly, 13-11 in the 5th game of his match, the stage was set. A solid performance by our No.4, T. Boonzaier & No.3, T. Van Baalen held their nerve to win both their fixtures 3-2, together with our No.1, A. Zitha & No.2, J. Van Der Wath securing the victory.

The final, as per last year was once again, against our most formidable rival, St John’s College. After a tough fixture in the morning, the lads really had to give it their all to compete against a strong St John’s College 1st team.

After going down 2 match to 0, the 3rd match of the day, resulted in an epic battle between T. Van Baalen and W. Davis. After a very tense and exciting match, it was Davis who succeeded with a level headed performance, securing a 12-10 in the 5th victory. The fixture was won.

In true King Edward VII spirit, despite the confirmed result, our No.1 & No.2 were still to complete their matches. A hearty effort by the two learners, narrowed the margin to 3-2 matches, doing the fixture much justice. It doesn’t get closer than this, providing for some exciting and entertaining squash for the parents and players alike.

Congratulations to St John’s College on winning the Central Gauteng Junior Squash Top Schools’ play-offs & a big thank you to St Stithians College and Irene Maxton for hosting the tournament over the weekend!

Share the spirit.
