Photographic Society- Term 2 round-up of activities.
28 June 2017
Photographic Society: Term 2 report back by Chair, Ms Avidon. We have had an exciting term in the Photographic Society:

The highlight being the result of the ‘Youth Showcase’ competition, run by the Photographic Society of America. Once a year, scholars from countries all over the world, compete against each other in this Salon. Each club/school could only send a maximum of 8 photos. The 2017 competition had a total of 966 entries (in 6 categories), of which 44 images were selected and entered from school clubs in South Africa. We are extremely proud of 4 boys from the King Edward VII Photographic Society, who received the following awards:

Taahir Makda and Rahul Parbhoo each received ‘Acceptances’ for their photos in the categories Monochrome (entitled 'Lion') and Photo Journalism (entitled 'Swimming the mile'), respectively.

Taahir Makda

Rahul Parbhoo

Yaseen Bhabha received an Honourable Mention (in South Africa it is called a Certificate of Merit) in the category: Colour Choice, for his photo, ‘Hanging Tree’.

And finally, the exceptional photo of Jamie Thomas, entitled ‘Hands up’ was awarded the 3rd place prize in the category: People or Animals.

Our boys also entered two 'Photographic Society of South Africa' competitions. The results will be announced in next term's report.

We would also like to congratulate the following boys who received a promotion in their star grading this year:
Adil Kuckuk, Luca Gnudi and Rahul Parbhoo - Promoted to 3 star
Chad Gaddie, Sebastian Freeman and Zaeem Bhabha - Promoted to 4 star
Yaseen Bhabha and Taahir Makda remain our only learners who currently have the highest - 5 star rating.

We welcome a new staff member, Mrs Amy Jones, into the King Edward Photographic Society. We are sure that her input of ideas and expertise, combining art and photography, will be very valuable to our photographic society.

We would like to thank Anne d'Oliveira, for her continued huge contribution to our society. Her excellent presentations on landscape and portraiture photography, her workshop on camera settings and her judging and commenting on the photos submitted by our boys, are all greatly appreciated. We also thank other members of the Camera Club of Johannesburg, Alan Mason, Kittie Groenewald, David Benn and Mark Geldenhuis for their presentations and judging of photos.
